Ολα ξεκινήσανε το 1932 με την ταινία "White zombie" του Victor Halperin στην οποία παίζει ο Bela Lugosi που είχε ερμηνεύσει με επιτυχία τον Dracula. Στην ταινία αυτή ο Lugosi παίζει τον κακό αριστοκράτη που δημιούργει zombies ως φτηνό εργατικό για τα χωράφια του. Έτσι ξεκινάνε οι παραγωγές και με την εταιρεία R.K.O. και με τον Val Lewton βγαίνουνε ταινίες όπως το "Κing Of Zombies"(1941), "Βowery At Midnight"(1942) και το "I Walked With A Zombie"(1943) όπου έχουμε την συνεργασία του Jacques Tourneur με τον Val Lewton.

Το 1944 έχουμε το "Voodoo Man" και μετά το χάος. Αρχίζουνε βγαίνουνε οι φθηνές παραγωγές με ταινίες όπως "Zombies On Broadway", "Teenage Zombies".

Όμως το 1962 με το "Carnival Of Souls"(Herk Harvey) και με το "The Plague Of The Zombies"(1966,  John Gilling) γίνεται η αιτία να επηρεαστεί ο 28χρονος τότε George Romero και να βγάλει το κλασικό "Night Of The Living Dead"(1968). Στην ταινία αυτή 2 αδέρφια ο Johnny και η Barbara επισκέφτονται τον τάφο του πατέρα τους ώσπου κανει την εμφάνιση του ένας άντρας και o Johnny πειράζει την Βarbara ότι ήρθε ένας νεκρός να την πάρει. Η αλήθεια όμως είναι ότι ο άντρας είναι zombie και έτσι ξεκινάνε όλα. O Romero όμως δεν σταματάει εδώ και συνεργάζεται με τον ιταλό σκηνοθέτη Dario Argento και βγάζει το "Dawn Of The Dead"(1978) το οπoίο σεναριακά θίγει το ανθρώπινο υπερκαταναλωτισμό. Tο 1985 βγάζει το "Day Of The Dead" το οπoίο με την σειρά του θίγει το πυρηνικό ολοκαύτωμα του πλανήτη. Την ίδια εποχή ο μόνος που κράτησε τις ταινίες zombie σε υψηλό επίπεδο είναι ο Lucio Fulci με ταινίες σταθμοί όπως η "City Of The Living Dead (1980)" και "The Beyond (1981)" . Το 1980 εμφανίζεται μια σπουδαία ταινία κατά την γνώμη μου το "Εvil dead" του Sam Raimi. Η ταινία βασίζεται στο βιβλίο Necronomicon και σε ένα κασετόφωνο που βρίσκει ο πρωταγωνιστής Bruce Campbell και πατώντας το "play" ελευθερώνει το κακό απο το δάσος. Ακολουθούνε άλλες 2 συνέχειες του Εvil Dead εξίσου καλές. Το 1981 ο Romero σκηνοθετεί το "Nightriders"με σενάριο τις περιπέτειες μιας ομάδας μοτοσυκλετιστών που ζούνε με τον κώδικα του King Arthur. Το 1985 βγαίνει μια απο τις αγαπημένες ταινίες πολλών θαυμαστών, το Return Of The Living Dead.

Ποιος ήταν όμως ο George Romero; Θεωρείτε από πολλούς ο πατέρας των ταινιών τρόμου με τα zombies. O George A. Romero γεννήθηκε το 1940 στο Bronx. Οι πρώτες του ταινίες ξεκινήσανε σε ηλικία 14 χρονών με μια κάμερα 8mm. Aφού αποφοίτησε απο το πανεπιστήμιο Carnegie-Mellon, ίδρυσε την The Latent Image μαζί με 2 φίλους του και ξεκίνησε να εργάζεται σε τηλεοπτικές διαφημίσεις και σε εκπαιδευτικές τηλεταινίες. Αφού έβγαλε αρκετά λεφτά  σκηνοθέτησε το all time classic "Night Of The Living dead". Αν και χαμηλού budget (114.000 δολλάρια) η ταινία άφησε εποχή και επηρέασε στην πορεία πολλούς σκηνοθέτες. Η εταιρεία διανομής ήτανε ήταν η Continental Films του Walter Reade και η ταινία έκανε πρεμιέρα στις 2 Οκτωβρίου του 1968. Απέσπασε αρνητικές κριτικές όμως μετά την επαναπροβολή της το 1969 έως το 1979 απέσπασε 12.000.000. δολλάρια. Πριν την ταινία υπήρχε ο φόβος των σκηνοθετών να δείξουνε τις ακραίες σκηνές όμως ο Romero τις καθιέρωσε. Η ταινία ξεκινάει με 2 αδέρφια τον Johnny και την Barbara που πάνε στο νεκροταφείο του πατέρα τους και κάνει την εμφάνιση του ένα zombie.

Ακολουθεί το "Re-animator"(1985) με έναν γιατρό που προσπαθεί να αναστήσει νεκρούς ιστούς. Την ίδια χρονιά ο Romero βγάζει το "Day Of  The Dead"στην οποία οι λιγοστοί ζωντανοί βρίσκονται σε πυρηνικά καταφύγια και οι πρωταγωνιστές τριγυρνούνε με ενα ελικόπτερο ψάχνοντας επιζήσαντες. Παράλληλα,μια ομάδα τρελών επιστημόνων κανει πειράματα  σε zombies μπας και βρούνε την λύση. Συνεχίζει πάλι το 1990 με το "Tales From The Darkside".

Τo 1994 βγαίνει το "Βraindead" του Peter Jackson (σκηνοθέτης του Lord Of The Rings) μιλάμε για την ταινία με το περισσότερο αίμα.

Ομως το 2005 ο Romero επιστρέφει με το είδος που τον ανέδειξε και βγάζει το "Land Of The Dead" και ξαναχτυπάει με το "Diary Of The Dead"(2007).

Άλλες ταινίες που βγαίνουν την ίδια εποχή είναι το "Resident Evil" (2002, 2004, 2007), το "28 Days Later"(2002) ,"28 Weeks Later"(2007) ,"Shaun Of The Dead"(2004), το "Plane dead"(2006) καθώς και το remake του "Dawn Of The Dead" (2004, Zack Snyder) και το remake του 2008 το "Day Of The Dead" (Steve Miner).

Αξίζει να αναφερθούνε τα remake του Tom Savini "Night Of The Living Dead"(1990), "Dawn Of The Dead"(Zack Snyder, 2004) και "Day Of The Dead" (2008,Steve Miner)

Τέλος,αξιοσημείωτες ταινίες είναι η "Rec"(2007) το "Quarantine (2009) και τα δικά μας "Tο Kακό"(2005) και "Το Κακό 2" (2009) ενώ αυτό το καιρό ο Romero ετοιμάζει το
